8 reasons to travel to the island of Tenerife, beyond the sun and beach

Why you must visit Tenerife

I have always had a very different idea of the tourist attractions of the island of Tenerife, compared to the idea that seems to be widespread that it is a destination of sun and sand.

The reason is that for a long, long time I lived on that island for a little over a year, specifically, in La Laguna, and then I had the opportunity to get to know it thoroughly and discover its many charms.

At that time, the tourist center of the island was the Puerto de la Cruz and the Valle de la Orotava.

This area is a big orchard, but it has the “problem” that during most of the year, and specifically in summer, it is usually covered by the sea of clouds resulting from the alíseos winds.

At the same time, at the beginning of the 1980s, the Tenerife South Airport had been opened a short time ago in the semi-desert zone of the south of the island.

There was in full development the great tourist bet of Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos, this area yes, with sun insurance throughout the year.

Of course, you should know that the beaches of Tenerife do not benefit from the large sediments of sand that come from the African continent to the islands of the eastern Canary Islands.

Therefore, its best beaches are artificial, which at that time affected that this island was not seen as a priority destination of sun and beach.

This does not mean that Tenerife is not attractive from the tourist point of view.

On the contrary, it is a great jewel that is not sufficiently known and appreciated by the Spaniards.

What to see in Tenerife

Next, I’ll give you important reasons to visit the island of Tenerife.

1.- Great variety of landscapes

If you do not know the Canary Islands and you consider visiting a first island, without a doubt that must be Tenerife.

The Canary Islands, from the landscape point of view, each have very different characteristics, but in Tenerife you find a large mosaic of them all.

You will be surprised by the enormous variety of landscapes that this island can offer.

From the orchard with leafy vegetation that of the Valley of the Orotava where the traditional tourist place of Puerto de la Cruz, to the volcanic landscapes of the Cañadas del Teide.

But you will also find landscapes with large forests of Canarian pine or areas of great greenness that will take you to Galicia, as a result of the humidity of the alíseos winds.

The sea of clouds resulting from the effect of these winds is another of the great scenic attractions of Tenerife.

2.- Cliffs and ravines in Tenerife

Tenerife has great mountains, deep cliffs, like the Cliffs of the Giants, and great ravines, like the one of Masca in the park of Teno, all of them to the west of the island.

I also want to highlight the spectacular mountainous landscapes of the northeast of the island, in the place known as Taganana, where you can circulate among the clouds that cross the mountain at high speed. And, of course, beaches, which are concentrated in the southern part of the island, apart from the popular Las Teresitas beach next to Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

3.- Climb the Teide

On the island of Tenerife you will see volcanic landscapes of such characteristics and dimensions that in the world you only find similar landscapes in Hawaii, the north of New Zealand or in Iceland.

El Teide is not only the highest mountain in Spain, but also the third largest volcano in the world from its base.

The astronaut Neil Armstrong said that in the surroundings of the Teide is where he has seen on Earth the landscapes most similar to those of the Moon.

And, also, the Cañadas del Teide is one of the places in the world where you can see a brighter and starry sky.

For this reason it has become one of the great tourist attractions of the island to promote astronomical tourism to see stars.

4.- La Laguna, a World Heritage City

But in addition to landscapes, in Tenerife you also have sites of great cultural interest, such as the historic city of La Laguna, which once was the capital of the island.

And now, completely remodeled after the declaration of World Heritage by Unesco, it is a beautiful corner to walk enjoying its monuments and colorful palatial houses.

5.- Garachico

But you also have other places to visit, such as the town of Garachico, in the north of the island, with a great architectural heritage of the 16th and 17th centuries.

In Garachico you will also be struck by its volcanic landscape, resulting from a large eruption that almost destroyed the town in the 18th century, and the El Caletón natural pool area.

Or the Basilica de la Candelaria, in the town of Candelaria, where the Virgin of Candelaria is worshiped, patron saint of the Canary Islands, which follows the tradition of the black virgins.

6.- Canarian traditions

Another great attraction of your visit to Tenerife will be discovering its culture,

With great differences compared to the peninsular, Tenerife has its cultural peculiarities compared to the other Canary Islands, although it shares traditions such as the Salto del Pastor Canario.

7.- Canarian gastronomy

In your trip to Tenerife you can not stop tasting its cuisine, with Canarian specialties that go beyond the famous potatoes wrinkled with mojo.

In this respect it is also worth mentioning the rabbit with salmorejo.

And do you know that in Tenerife you can also taste local wine?

In fact, in recent years the production of wine on the island has been reactivated thanks to the planting of new varieties of grapes.

That’s right, in the big tourist areas of the island you will have a great offer of good quality international cuisine.

8.- And also sun and beach

Finally, comment that also in Tenerife you can enjoy the typical sun and beach tourism in large resorts.

These are mainly concentrated in the aforementioned tourist area of the south of the island, and specifically, in Playa de las Américas.

There you have large resort hotels with all kinds of luxuries, which will allow you a pleasant holiday, and which can be an excellent starting point for your essential excursions to the rest of the island.

Of course, if you only look for sun and beaches of sand dunes and fine sand, I would point out that Fuerteventura or Gran Canaria are more suitable islands for this type of tourism.
